Who installs CCTV in Hertfordshire?

We do, from Luton, across the whole county with no travel charge. DC Fire & Security is SSAIB certificated for CCTV. We fit systems for commercial yards, residential blocks and schools, and we set them up to meet the ICO's UK GDPR guidance: signage, a clear purpose, controlled access to footage and a sensible retention period.

Commercial yards and industrial units

The aim is to see a person before they reach the fence, and to get a usable picture afterwards.

Buying guidance for these sites is in commercial CCTV, CCTV for warehouses and CCTV for car parks.

Residential blocks

The people you film are your residents, so what you point the cameras at matters.

In a block, cameras usually cover the entrance lobby, the door entry point, stairwells, lifts, the car park and bin and bike stores. They should not look into flat windows or along a landing so that they record a resident's own front door more than they have to.

  • Entrance and door entry. Pair the camera with the entry system. See door entry.
  • Communal areas. Tell residents what is filmed and why, and who can view the footage.
  • Managing agent access. Footage should be viewable by named people with a log, not by everyone on site.
  • Remote viewing. Use accounts that can be disabled when staff leave.

More in CCTV for blocks of flats. Camera systems sit alongside, and do not replace, the fire safety duties in a block. See fire risk assessments in Hertfordshire.

Schools

Cameras on school sites record children. That raises the bar.

Typical positions are entrances, the car park, bin and cycle stores, corridors at the edges of the site, and the perimeter. Cameras are not normally appropriate in toilets or changing areas. Recording audio needs a very strong justification. The ICO's guidance says audio should be off by default.

Schools also need a clear policy on who views footage, how requests from parents or the police are handled, and how long recordings are kept. Our page on CCTV in schools covers the rules, and access control for schools covers the doors.

GDPR and ICO basics for any system

If your cameras record identifiable people, UK GDPR applies. These are the points the ICO guidance stresses.

  1. 1Decide the purpose. Write down why you have the cameras, such as preventing crime or protecting staff, and check a camera is the right answer.
  2. 2Record a lawful basis. For most businesses this is legitimate interests, with a short written balance of your needs against people's privacy.
  3. 3Assess the risk. The ICO expects a data protection impact assessment in most cases. For a small limited system it has a shorter checklist.
  4. 4Put up signs. They must say that CCTV is in use, who runs it and how to contact them. See CCTV signage.
  5. 5Limit what you capture. Frame cameras on your own space as far as you can.
  6. 6Set a retention period. The ICO sets no fixed number of days. Keep footage only as long as the purpose needs. See how much storage CCTV needs.
  7. 7Control access. Know who can view and export, and how you answer a subject access request.
  8. 8Pay the fee. Organisations processing images of identifiable people generally need to register and pay the ICO data protection fee.

Footage you want to use in a dispute should be exported cleanly, with the time and date correct. See is CCTV footage admissible in court. The ICO says its guidance is under review because of the Data (Use and Access) Act, so check the latest version.

How we do it

Survey, fixed price, install, handover.

We start from what you need to see, then choose cameras and recorders to match. Our guides cover how many cameras you need and how to compare quotes. At handover we show the named users how to find and export footage, and leave a privacy checklist. A service plan is covered in CCTV maintenance contracts.
