Do you cover all of Hertfordshire?

Yes. We are based at 2 Winsdon Court in Luton, so Hertfordshire is the next county along. We cover all ten district and borough council areas, from Watford and Hemel Hempstead in the west to Stevenage, Hitchin and Bishop's Stortford in the east. We do fire risk assessments, fire doors, fire stopping, fire alarms, CCTV, intruder alarms and access control, and we do not charge for travel.

Where we cover, council area by council area

Hertfordshire has one county council and ten district and borough councils. Planning, housing and licensing sit with the ten. The fire service sits with the county.

How far is Hertfordshire from Luton?

Not far. Luton sits on the Bedfordshire border, and the north and centre of the county are the short side of it.

Harpenden, St Albans, Hitchin, Stevenage and Hemel Hempstead are our nearest Hertfordshire jobs. Bishop's Stortford, Waltham Cross and Cheshunt are across the far side of the county, so we plan those visits by route and batch them where we can.

We do not charge travel anywhere in our regions. That includes the far east of the county. If a job needs a second visit, for example a survey followed by remedial work, we say so in the quote.

What we do in Hertfordshire

Each service has a national page and a Hertfordshire page with the local detail.

A fire risk assessment and a fire door inspection are separate services. We often do both for the same building, and they sit side by side.

Who enforces fire safety in Hertfordshire?

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, which is part of Hertfordshire County Council.

The service runs 29 fire stations from a headquarters in Hertford, with a training centre in Stevenage. Its Business Fire Safety Team covers commercial buildings and the common areas of flats. It inspects on a risk basis, so higher-risk premises such as those with sleeping accommodation are the most likely to be visited.

The service says it will not write your fire risk assessment for you. That duty stays with the responsible person under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. If you manage a building in the county and are not sure whether that is you, read who is the responsible person for fire safety.

The kinds of building we see in the county

Three types account for most Hertfordshire enquiries.

  • Commuter-belt flats and new-build blocks. Communal alarms, flat entrance doors, door entry and CCTV. See fire door rules for flats and CCTV for blocks of flats.
  • Older town-centre buildings. Market towns such as St Albans, Hertford, Hitchin and Bishop's Stortford have historic centres. Alarms there often have to be fitted without damaging the fabric. See alarms for listed buildings.
  • Business parks and employer sites. Hertfordshire's economic body, Hertfordshire Futures, names life sciences, film and TV, creative media and advanced manufacturing among the county's strengths. Those sites need assessed, maintained and monitored fire and security systems. See offices and warehouses.

How to get a Hertfordshire quote

Send what you have. We price from photos and documents first.

  1. 1Send the basics. Address, building type, number of floors and doors, and any previous report.
  2. 2We come back with a fixed price once we have the details. We usually do this the same day.
  3. 3We book a visit that suits you, planned by route so travel stays out of the price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you charge for travel in Hertfordshire?
No. Travel is not charged anywhere in our regions, and that includes the whole of Hertfordshire. If a job needs more than one visit we say so in the quote.
Which Hertfordshire council do I deal with for HMO licensing?
The district or borough council where the property sits, not the county council. We set out what the councils expect on our Hertfordshire fire risk assessment page.
Who enforces fire safety law in Hertfordshire?
Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service enforces the Fire Safety Order in commercial buildings and the common areas of flats. It is part of Hertfordshire County Council.
Can you quote from photos?
Yes. Send photos, floor plans or a previous report to info@dcsecurity.co.uk and we usually come back with a fixed price the same day. We then confirm on site where it matters.
Do you do fire door inspections and fire risk assessments together?
We can do both for the same building, but they are two separate services with two separate reports. A fire risk assessment does not replace a fire door inspection. They sit side by side.
Are you a Hertfordshire company?
We are based in Luton, Bedfordshire, next to the county border. We cover Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, London, the Thames Valley and the East Midlands.
