By the DC Fire & Security engineering team — installing and maintaining fire and security systems since 2010. Updated June 2026.
ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) is camera technology that reads vehicle number plates automatically, converting each plate into searchable text with a timestamp and image. Businesses use it to open barriers for authorised vehicles, log every vehicle entering a site, manage parking, and provide evidence — modern dedicated ANPR cameras read plates reliably at up to 95%+ accuracy, day and night.
A dedicated ANPR camera combines a sensor optimised for fast shutter speeds with infrared illumination tuned to the retroreflective surface of UK plates. The camera isolates the plate in the image, runs optical character recognition on it, and outputs the registration as text with a confidence score, timestamp and overview image. Good installations control angle, height and lane width — plate reading is geometry as much as software, which is why a general CCTV camera 'with ANPR mode' disappoints at site entrances.
Plate data is personal data, so business ANPR falls under UK GDPR: you need a lawful basis and documented purpose, signage telling drivers ANPR is in use, a justified retention period, and security around the data. For a typical site-access system this is straightforward to satisfy — we supply the signage and configure retention as part of installation. What you must not do is repurpose access-control plate logs for anything you haven't told people about.
We install and maintain fire and security systems across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and London — with fixed written quotes, a 36-month warranty, and certification your insurer will accept.
