A competent fire door inspection works through 8 component groups on every single door — gaps, seals, hinges, closer, glazing, certification labels, threshold and signage — recorded door by door with photographs. The checklist below is the one DC Fire & Security inspectors work through, aligned to BS 8214:2026. Gaps are where most fire doors fail first. The working band at the head and stiles is 2–4 mm, aiming for 3 mm, and the number matters because intumescent seals can only bridge so much: at 3 mm they close the gap early in a fire, at 6 or 7 mm they may never seal it. An inspector measures along the full edge, not at one convenient spot — doors drop, frames move, and a door can be right at the top and wrong at the latch. The label or plug is the door's test evidence — proof of what it is and what it was tested to do. Without it a door becomes “notional”: it might be a fire door, and no one can demonstrate it. Inspectors check the top edge and hinge stile, and note where decorators have painted the evidence out of existence. A notional door isn't automatically scrap, but it can't simply be signed off either — it needs assessing on construction, and sometimes upgrading, before anyone certifies it.
Door by door: location, what was checked, what failed, a photograph of each defect and a remedial recommendation with a price against it. DC Fire & Security prices defects individually in every report, and the test of a good report is blunt: another contractor should be able to price the remedial works from it without a site visit. A tick-box sheet with no photographs and no per-defect detail tells you a door was walked past, not inspected.
