Quick answer

A smoke alarm chirping once every 30–60 seconds is telling you something: most often a low battery, an expired alarm (they have a 10-year life), or dust in the sensing chamber. A different unit may be chirping than you think — sound bounces. Replace the battery first; if chirping continues, check the date on the back: past 10 years, replace the alarm itself.

Why do smoke alarms chirp at 3am?

Battery voltage drops as temperature falls, and houses are coldest in the small hours — a battery that's marginal by day dips below the warning threshold at night. It feels personal; it's physics. The fix is the same: a fresh battery, or a new alarm if the unit is past its date. Mains-powered alarms chirp too: their 9V backup battery ages exactly the same way.

When the alarm itself needs replacing

Every smoke alarm has a replace-by date — sensors degrade, and after about 10 years false alerts rise and sensitivity falls. The date of manufacture is printed on the back. Modern practice (and what we fit) is sealed 10-year lithium alarms: no battery changes, no 3am chirps, replaced as a unit at end of life. If your alarms still take 9V batteries annually, they're probably old enough that wholesale replacement with sealed interlinked units is the better spend.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop the chirping right now at 3am?
Press and hold the test/hush button — most units silence warnings for several hours. Then replace the battery (or note to replace the unit) in daylight. Don't remove the battery and forget: an alarm without power protects no one.
I changed the battery and it still chirps — why?
Either the alarm is past its 10-year life, the new battery is weak (check date codes on spares), the battery contacts are dirty, or a different nearby unit is the one chirping. Check manufacture dates first.
Do mains-powered smoke alarms beep too?
Yes — for their backup battery, end of life, or mains supply loss. A green light should show mains present; chirping with green light on points at the backup battery or the unit's age.
What smoke alarms do landlords need in England?
At least one smoke alarm per storey with living accommodation and a carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fixed combustion appliance (excluding gas cookers), working at the start of every tenancy and repaired/replaced promptly when reported — see our landlord smoke alarm guide.
