At home, a fire alarm sounding with no smoke is nearly always steam, cooking particles, dust, an insect, a dying battery or a sensor past its 10-year life. In a business, it's usually a dirty or aged detector head, the wrong detector type for the room, or a zone fault — and the panel's event log will say which. Fix the cause rather than resetting daily: fire brigades now charge for repeat false call-outs to commercial premises, and staff stop reacting to alarms that cry wolf.
On interlinked systems, remember one triggering unit sounds them all. The unit with the flashing or solid indicator LED is the one that fired — find it before assuming the alarm in front of you is the culprit.
Not superstition: overnight the house cools, battery voltage sags, and boilers kick in with condensation. A sensor already on the edge — dusty, elderly, or with a weak cell — tips over exactly then. A fire alarm that repeatedly activates in the small hours with nothing burning is announcing its battery or its birthday.
Commercial false alarms leave evidence: the panel's event log records which device activated and when. Patterns tell the story — the same head in the kitchen corridor every fry-up is a detector-type problem (optical where heat should be); a workshop head after every dusty job wants relocation or a different technology; random single-device activations from one zone with no pattern is classically a dirty or aged head; whole-zone faults with no device shown point at wiring or the panel.
Detector heads have service lives and manufacturers' cleaning schedules. Premises that skip twice-yearly BS 5839-1 servicing accumulate exactly the drift that causes phantom fires — servicing exists to remove causes before they perform.
Fire and rescue services charge for repeat attendance to false automatic alarms at non-domestic premises — London's brigade bills after a threshold of false call-outs in a rolling year, and other services run similar schemes. Add what's harder to invoice: evacuated staff, interrupted production, and the day the team stops taking the sounders seriously.
If your building is monitored, the alarm receiving centre can apply confirmation delays and filtering so a single head's wobble doesn't dispatch the brigade — that's configuration, not new hardware, and it's part of a service visit conversation.

Don't take the batteries out and move on — in a rental that's the landlord's compliance failing, and in any building it's the protection gone. Don't disable a commercial zone to stop the noise and leave it disabled; a disabled zone is a finding in the next fire risk assessment and an awkward sentence in an insurance claim. A system that false-alarms is telling you it needs attention, and the attention costs less than the habit of ignoring it.
