Warehouse security is a layers problem: the fence and yard slow and announce, the shell (doors, shutters, rooflights) resists and detects, the graded intruder alarm with dual-path signalling makes entry loud in a monitoring centre and not just in an empty unit, cameras cover the approaches *and* the pick-pack-dispatch flow — because shrinkage usually beats burglary as the real loss line — and access control keeps leavers, agency staff and drivers where they belong. Spec is driven by two documents: your insurer's requirements and an honest map of how stock actually moves.
Three different problems get called 'warehouse security', and they need different tools. Break-ins go through shutters, personnel doors and increasingly the roof, for whatever moves fast — tools, electronics, tyres, alcohol, copper. Shrinkage — internal and collusive loss through the dispatch door — is quieter and, at most sites we survey, costs more per year than any burglary. Process abuse — tailgating drivers, agency staff wandering, propped fire exits — is the enabler of both.
The spec follows the model: burglary defence lives at the perimeter and shell; shrinkage defence lives in camera coverage of goods-in, pick faces and dispatch plus access discipline; process defence is access control and management actually reading the reports.

Warehouse policies are specific: minimum alarm grade, signalling type, response arrangements, sometimes named standards for shutters and locks. An installation that misses the schedule can void theft cover outright — so the schedule is the first document we ask for at survey, and the spec gets written to it line by line. If the insurer requires an NSI or SSAIB installer (most do for graded systems), both qualify identically.
Two clauses that catch tenants: unoccupancy conditions (cover changing when the unit sits empty over holidays — your arming and checking routine is the compliance), and stock-specific requirements (alcohol, tobacco, electronics often trigger Grade 3 plus caged storage). If your stock profile has changed since the policy was written, the mismatch is worth finding before a claim does.
Detection without response is documentation. The realistic options, cheapest first: app-monitored (notifications to keyholders — works if someone genuinely will get up), ARC keyholder response (a monitoring centre confirms and calls the chain, or dispatches a response company), and police response via URN for confirmed activations on certificated systems. Most warehouses land on ARC monitoring with a response company for the 3am visits nobody staff wants.
Worth adding where the yard justifies it: detection-triggered lighting and sounders in the yard itself (announcing the visit before entry), and camera analytics that flag out-of-hours movement at the perimeter rather than waiting for the shutter. If the site runs plant or a construction phase, the construction-site security setup covers the temporary end of the same problem.
