A master key system is a set of locks pinned so that each individual key opens only its own door, while master-level keys open groups of doors — a cleaner's key opens cleaning stores, a floor master opens one floor, the grand master opens everything. The mechanism is extra pin splits inside each cylinder that accept more than one key profile. Done properly it runs on restricted key blanks that can't be copied at a heel bar — because the system's whole security rests on knowing how many keys exist. Its modern rival is electronic access control, and the honest crossover is simple: mechanical suites excel at many low-traffic doors on a budget; electronics win wherever you need to *revoke* access or *know* who went where.
A standard pin-tumbler cylinder opens when its pin stack splits at exactly one height — the height cut into your key. Master-suited cylinders add extra split points (master wafers) so the stack can split correctly at two or more heights: one for the door's own key, another for the master. Chain those splits across a building to a plan and you get the hierarchy: grand master over everything, masters over zones or floors, sub-masters over departments, and change keys for single doors.
The elegance has a cost worth knowing: every extra split point is another combination the cylinder accepts, which mathematically eases some attacks on heavily-suited cylinders. Good suites manage that with quality cylinders (anti-snap, anti-pick — the same features that matter on any external door) and by not over-suiting: the deeper the hierarchy, the more shear lines each cylinder carries.
The paperwork is half the system: a door schedule (which doors, which cylinders, which suite position) and a key register (every key, numbered, signed for). A suite without a register degrades into ordinary keys with extra steps within a couple of staff turnovers.

Ordinary key blanks hang on a board in every cobbler's shop — which means an ordinary-profile master key can be copied in two minutes by anyone who borrows it for lunch. Restricted profiles fix this: the blank's cross-section is protected (typically by patent and controlled distribution), keys are cut only by authorised centres against signatures on the register, and 'how many grand masters exist' stays a fact rather than a guess.
This is the first question to ask about any existing suite — and the deciding one after a loss. A lost change key on a restricted suite means re-pinning one cylinder. A lost grand master means re-pinning everything it opened; on an unrestricted suite, where it might already have been copied, it means doing so urgently. That single failure mode is the strongest argument for the electronic alternative on high-turnover doors.
Mechanical wins where doors are many, traffic is low, power is absent and budgets are tight: internal office doors, stores, risers, plant rooms, blocks of identical bedsit doors. No batteries, no software, decades of service — at roughly the cost of a good cylinder per door.
Electronic wins wherever people churn or evidence matters: main entrances, HMO front doors, server rooms, anywhere you'd otherwise re-pin locks every time someone leaves. Revocation is a click, and the audit trail exists — the access control guide covers how that side works.
Most real buildings land on the hybrid we spec most often: electronic control on the entrance and the sensitive rooms, a modest restricted suite behind it for the internal doors, and the grand master living in a key safe the electronic system logs access to. Each technology doing the job it's cheap at — that's the whole trick.
