Fire suppression systems — sprinklers, watermist, gas and kitchen suppression

A fire suppression system is engineered to control or extinguish a fire automatically at its source, before it spreads. We design, install and maintain the right suppression technology for the risk — automatic sprinklers and watermist for buildings, clean-agent gas suppression for server rooms and electrical risk, and wet-chemical systems for commercial kitchens. Every system is specified to the relevant British Standard, commissioned with a certificate, and kept compliant on a planned maintenance contract.

Who is this for?

For building owners, developers, facilities managers, restaurant and hotel operators, and data-centre and IT teams who need automatic fire suppression designed, installed and certified — whether to satisfy Building Regulations, an insurer requirement, or a fire risk assessment recommendation.

  • Developers meeting Approved Document B sprinkler requirements in residential blocks over 11m
  • Warehouse and logistics operators protecting high-piled storage
  • Restaurants, hotels and commercial kitchens needing wet-chemical protection over cooking ranges
  • Data centres, server rooms and comms rooms needing clean-agent gas suppression
  • Care homes and sheltered housing where sprinklers support the evacuation strategy
  • Manufacturing and plant with specific machinery or spray-booth fire risks
  • Landlords and managing agents actioning a suppression recommendation from an FRA
  • Insurers and brokers requiring an LPS-certified sprinkler installation

Fire suppression problems we resolve

  • New residential blocks over 11m that now require sprinklers under Approved Document B but have no design in place
  • Commercial kitchens with no fixed suppression over the cooking line — the single most common cause of catastrophic restaurant fires
  • Server rooms and comms rooms protected only by a smoke detector, with no means of extinguishing a fire before hardware and data are lost
  • Existing sprinkler systems that have never been serviced, with corroded valves, low water pressure or missing block plans
  • High-piled storage or racking changes that have outgrown the original sprinkler design density
  • Suppression systems installed by others with no commissioning certificate, block plan or O&M manual for the insurer
  • Kitchen suppression cylinders past their service interval, invalidating the insurance cover

What's included in our fire suppression service

Risk-Based System Selection

We match the suppression technology to the hazard — sprinklers or watermist for general building protection, clean-agent gas for electrical and IT risk, wet chemical for kitchens — rather than forcing one solution onto every job.

Design to British Standard

Sprinklers designed to BS EN 12845 (and LPC/LPS rules where insurers require), watermist to BS 8489 / DD 8489, gas suppression to BS EN 15004, and kitchen systems to the manufacturer's LPS 1223-listed specification.

Hydraulic & Water-Supply Assessment

For water-based systems we verify the available flow and pressure, and specify tanks, pumps or mains upgrades where the supply is insufficient.

Clean-Agent Gas Suppression

Inert gas or chemical clean-agent systems (e.g. IG-55, FK-5-1-12) for server rooms and electrical spaces — extinguishing fire without water damage to equipment, with room-integrity fan testing.

Kitchen (Wet Chemical) Systems

Fixed suppression over cooking ranges, fryers and extract canopies, interlocked to cut gas and electrical supply on activation.

Commissioning & Certification

Every system is commissioned, flow/pressure or discharge tested, and handed over with a commissioning certificate, block plan and O&M manual for your insurer and fire risk assessment.

Scope of works

Our qualified engineers carry out the following as standard:

Automatic sprinkler systems (wet, dry, pre-action) to BS EN 12845
Residential and domestic sprinklers to BS 9251 for flats and care settings
Watermist systems to BS 8489 / DD 8489 where water volume is constrained
Clean-agent gas suppression to BS EN 15004 for server and comms rooms
Kitchen wet-chemical suppression over ranges, fryers and canopies
Sprinkler tanks, booster pumps and water-supply upgrades
Zone control valves, flow switches and alarm interfaces to the fire panel
Block plans, hydraulic calculations and O&M documentation
Planned preventative maintenance and annual certification
Cylinder re-fill, weigh and service for gas and kitchen systems

Frequently asked questions

What is a fire suppression system?
A fire suppression system automatically detects and controls or extinguishes a fire at its source without needing a person to act. The main types are automatic sprinklers and watermist (water-based, for general building protection), clean-agent gas systems (for server rooms and electrical risk, where water would cause damage), and wet-chemical systems (for commercial kitchens). The right type depends entirely on what is being protected.
Are sprinklers now a legal requirement in blocks of flats?
Under Approved Document B, new blocks of flats with a top storey above 11 metres require automatic sprinkler protection. Requirements also arise from a building's fire strategy, insurer conditions, or a fire risk assessment. We assess your building against the current standards and confirm exactly what is required before quoting.
What is the difference between sprinklers and a gas suppression system?
Sprinklers use water and are ideal for general building and life protection — only the heads over the fire operate, limiting water damage. Gas (clean-agent) suppression floods a sealed room with an inert or chemical agent that extinguishes fire without water, which is why it is used for server rooms, comms rooms and electrical spaces where water would destroy equipment. Many sites need both, in different areas.
Do I legally need a suppression system over my commercial kitchen?
There is no single law naming kitchen suppression, but a commercial cooking range is a high fire risk, and most insurers now require a fixed wet-chemical suppression system over the cooking line and extract canopy as a condition of cover. A fire risk assessment will almost always flag an unprotected commercial kitchen. Without a compliant, in-service system, a kitchen fire claim can be refused.
How often does a fire suppression system need servicing?
Sprinkler systems are inspected and tested to BS EN 12845 on weekly, quarterly and annual cycles. Kitchen wet-chemical systems are typically serviced every six months. Gas suppression cylinders are weighed and inspected annually and pressure-tested on a longer cycle. We put your system on a planned maintenance contract so nothing lapses and your cover stays valid.
Will a suppression system cause water damage if it goes off by accident?
Modern sprinkler heads are individually heat-activated — only the head directly above a fire operates, so a genuine activation is localised, and accidental whole-building discharge is very rare. Where water damage cannot be tolerated at all, such as data centres, we specify clean-agent gas or watermist instead, which is exactly why those technologies exist.
Can you connect suppression to our fire alarm?
Yes. We interface flow switches, pressure switches and gas-release signals to the fire alarm panel so that activation raises the building alarm and, where required, shuts off gas and electrical supplies. This interlock is essential for kitchen and gas systems and is part of every commissioning we carry out.
What documentation do I get?
On completion you receive a commissioning certificate, a block plan showing the system layout and control points, hydraulic or gas-concentration calculations, and an operating and maintenance (O&M) manual. This is the evidence your insurer, building control and fire risk assessor need to confirm the system is fit for purpose.
