For most UK homes and SMEs, Hikvision and Dahua offer the best capability per pound, with Uniview close behind on value. Axis and Hanwha Vision lead where public-sector procurement excludes Chinese brands or enterprise features matter, at two to four times the price. Verkada owns the cloud-managed multi-site niche. The installer matters more than the badge.
| Brand | Strength | Watch-outs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hikvision | ColorVu night colour, AcuSense AI, huge range | Banned from some public-sector sites | Homes, SMEs, most commercial |
| Dahua | WizSense AI, strong value, TiOC active deterrence | Same procurement caveat | Budget-conscious pro installs |
| Uniview | Price, solid 4K range | Smaller UK ecosystem | Straightforward coverage on a budget |
| Axis | Build quality, cybersecurity pedigree, open platform | 2–4× price | Enterprise, public sector, integrations |
| Hanwha Vision | Enterprise features, NDAA-compliant | Price, fewer installers | Government-adjacent, corporate estates |
| Verkada | Cloud management, multi-site dashboards | Per-camera licensing forever | Multi-site businesses valuing IT-style management |
UK government departments were directed to remove Hikvision/Dahua equipment from sensitive sites, and some councils, schools trusts and corporates follow suit by policy. For ordinary commercial and residential use they remain lawful, dominant and well-supported — our standard practice is straightforward: we state the policy landscape, isolate cameras on their own network segment without internet access where warranted, and fit Axis or Hanwha where a client's procurement rules require it. Security posture comes mostly from configuration, whoever made the camera.
Pick by buyer type, not spec sheets: homes and most SMEs get the best results from Hikvision/Dahua fitted well; multi-site operators who want one dashboard and zero NVRs should price Verkada knowing licences recur; policy-constrained buyers go Axis/Hanwha and budget accordingly. Then judge installers rather than brands: camera schedule and placement plan in the quote, storage calculations shown, network security approach, commissioning certificate, and a warranty you can phone. We're happy to quote the same design across two brands so the premium is visible.
We install and maintain fire and security systems across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and London — with fixed written quotes, a 36-month warranty, and certification your insurer will accept.
